REVIEWS BY BENEDICT ‘NED’ JONES TriX – Astaire VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with cooling TriX – Cracked VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Moderate, with cooling TriX – Sham VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with cooling Astaire is a classic fruit/menthol profile that has become a cornerstone of the e-liquid world in the UK, so how does ELFC’s offering measure up? The top note here is a blend of candied grape and mixed berries. The grape isn’t overbearing and really just adds a slightly darker sweetness to the more prominent mixed berry notes. The berries are also of the candied variety, and do not carry the floral notes found in more natural representations. This is complemented by a mild aniseed accent which adds a bit of depth, without obscuring any of the berry’s sweetness. The mix is finished with a very potent eucalyptus and menthol, a trademark of the Astaire profile. This strong coolant combination keeps Astaire light and makes it a solid palate cleanser for those with vaper’s tongue. Another simple blend from the TriX line- up. Cracked is described as a mix of raspberry, summer fruits and mint. An intense raspberry dominates the profile here. It has some elements of a sweet, hard candy raspberry, but also includes some of the earthy and floral notes found in more natural renditions. The two are blended together quite well, resulting in a raspberry top note that’s a bit different from the usual fare. There is a very mild hint of a summer fruit medley, but it fades among that potent raspberry top note. The profile is rounded off by an eye-wateringly powerful combination of mint and eucalyptus. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart, but it does a good job of keeping things fresh and will certainly cleanse the palate. Sham is another simple profile from the TriX line. That’s not to say it’s boring, though, as we don’t often see mint ice cream blends in the e-liquid world. The peppermint top note here is rather potent. It brings some sweetness to the mix, but also has traces of herbal notes that you would expect from a more natural peppermint extract. This is supported by a luxurious vanilla cream base, which adds a very substantial body to the mouth-feel and also rounds off any of the potentially astringent edges of the minty top note. It must be said, though, that this peppermint is dominating things which isn’t necessarily what I would expect from a minty ice cream. To me, the result is something more akin to a mint humbug than a full-fledged ice cream, but this is still a pleasant vape for mint fans. TriX - Tunes VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with cooling TriX – Twister VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Moderate TriX – Pink VG/PG ratio: Chosen by user, we mixed at 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild If you’re looking for subtlety or nuance, Tunes may not be your thing. Cherry/ menthol mixes seem to have a hardcore following in the UK and this profile is somewhat of a love letter to those people. The cherry top note here is extreme in strength, bringing plenty of sweetness and more than a hint of a medicinal aftertaste as a result. This may well be too much for some vapers, but cherry/menthol fans will be delighted. The cherry is supported by an equally strong menthol/eucalyptus mix, which absolutely blasts the palate with sinus clearing freshness. Tunes is definitely not for everyone, but if an in- your-face medicinal cherry mix is your kind of thing, this could be just what you’re after! Described as a blend of strawberry, pineapple, lime and ice cream, Twister is one of the more complex profiles from the TriX range. A rather intense candy lime dominates the mix here. It has a strong citrus kick and certainly brings some throat hit to the table but is quite accurate to the candy lime often found in iced treats. This is supported by a mild strawberry which is bringing some needed additional sweetness to the mix, though it’s behaving more like an accent due to the potency of the lime top note. The profile is finished off with a very subtle vanilla cream base which does some work to counter the astringency of the citrus, but I feel it could be higher in the mix. Described as a lemonade and mixed berries blend, Pink is one of the simpler profiles from the TriX line-up. The top note here is a potent candy lemon, which provides plenty of sweetness, along with some sharper notes and a sour tang. This isn’t what I would describe as a home- style lemonade drink, it’s more akin to a hard-boiled lemon sweet. Think lemon sherbet, without the fizzy filling. The lemon is complemented by a much more mellow berry medley. These mild dark fruits do a good job of softening the sharper citric edge from the lemon top note, whilst bolstering the sweetness of the mix. This is still a very lemon forward profile though and may be great for some vapers. 144 | THE VAPER EXPO
