REVIEWS BY BENEDICT ‘NED’ JONES Coconut Cream Pie VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Apple Pie VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Key Lime Pie VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Described as a blend of coconut, whipped cream and shaved almonds, Mama’s Coconut Cream Pie is an ambitious bakery e-liquid with lots of layers, requiring keen attention to detail. Sweet desiccated coconut is the top note here. It’s present but not overpowering and totally avoids the sun tan lotion notes which some coconut e-liquids unfortunately carry. This is supported by a thick vanilla cream base which adds some real substance to the mouthfeel, along with some welcome sweetness. The almond element is more of an accent than anything and doesn’t overpower the mix or impart any of the harshness sometimes associated with nut flavourings. It does a good job of adding complexity to the profile without getting in the way of the main elements. This is a very well-crafted dessert profile that many vapers will enjoy. Mama’s could hardly avoid offering an apple pie blend considering their all-American branding. There are many manufacturers vying for the top apple pie spot though, so how does this one compare to others on the market? A sweet but still somewhat sharp Fuji apple is the predominant note here. This is more of a lightly baked apple than the mellow sweetness of the soft sugar-drenched renditions often found in the e-liquid world. The apple is accented by a moderately strong cinnamon note which, as is often the case, works nicely to contrast the brighter elements of the fruit component. The profile is rounded out with a light pastry note that layers the blend whilst adding some substance and a mild, syrupy aftertaste. This is a well- constructed apple pie profile that dessert fans should enjoy. Another classic dessert profile that screams USA. Key lime is the star of the show here. It’s rather sweet, almost giving a candied connotation, but it still retains some of the citric acidity you’d expect from a natural lime. This is supported by a heavy vanilla cream base which has a very moreish mouthfeel and adds some real weight to the mix. There also seems to be a powdered sugar accent going on here, which bolsters the already sweet nature of the profile and while this may not be for everyone, it doesn’t interfere with the other flavours. The profile is finished with a mild bakery note that adds a bit of texture to the vape and ties everything together. Key Lime Pie is a very sweet e-liquid, but this is true to life and will make it a good option for some vapers. Orange Sticky Bun VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Orange Sticky Bun is an interesting idea for a dessert profile and not one that I can say I’ve seen before. Orange icing, cinnamon and cake doesn’t sound like it should work, so is it an unconventional winner or an experiment that never should have happened? Orange is the top note here, it’s syrup-like and brings a sticky mouthfeel to the mix, but doesn’t dominate the other flavours by any means. Mama’s description of “sugar-orange glaze” is very accurate. This is paired with a sweet confectionary cinnamon, which alters the orange in a unique way that I’ve not tasted before. The mild spice notes of the cinnamon contrast nicely with the brighter orange, resulting in a pleasant, if unconventional, profile. The mix is rounded off with a substantial bakery base which adds texture and body to the profile, whilst bolstering its sweetness. Orange Sticky Bun may be an acquired taste but it works. 134 | THE VAPER EXPO Nana Nut Swirl VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Blueberry Cheesecake/ Blackberry Cheesecake: VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Moderate Throat hit: Mild Another classic bakery profile from the Mama’s range. Banana nut bread is perhaps a safe option as far as desserts go, but when done properly the result is usually a satisfying and moreish vape. The banana note here is particularly impressive when compared to competing offerings. It tastes like a natural baked banana puree, rather than the foam candy banana that is found all too often in vaping. This is no easy feat, and this immediately sets Nana Nut Swirl apart from the crowd. The banana is paired with a mild cinnamon, which works as well as you might expect, really lending itself to the bakery profile that this e-liquid wishes to achieve. The cake notes here are less heavy than in some of the other blends from Mama’s, which isn’t an issue since the banana is already providing a dense and creamy body. The described hazelnut note is very subtle, but does add to the mix nonetheless. Nana Nut Swirl is an outstanding banana vape. No dessert line would be complete without some cheesecake offerings. Mama’s Blueberry Cheesecake is a simple profile, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a boring one. The blueberry top note is quite jam like, bringing a fair amount of sweetness to the mix, whilst retaining some of the floral notes that are to be expected from this fruit. The cheesecake base is quite simplistic but well-crafted. The thick vanilla cream plays well with some subtle eggy and more natural diary notes. There’s not a substantial amount of cream cheese flavour going on here but that’s not really a complaint since this can go awry fairly easily and even when properly executed is a divisive note. A graham crust rounds out the blend, providing some texture and bakery sweetness. This is a well- done cheesecake flavour that will please many dessert fans. If you’re looking for a cheesecake with a more intensely tart and floral fruit topping, Mama’s Blackberry Cheesecake may be a better option.
