FYI Electronic Cigarette Association (ECA) – An industry group formed in early 2009. It is made up of suppliers and manufacturers who combined resources to help keep the e-cigarette as a legal option for smokers in the USA. Electronic Cigarette (e-cig) – This is the device which contains the e-liquid and which transforms the liquid into a vapour which can be inhaled. Unlike a traditional cigarette it does not contain tobacco and does not produce the harmful chemicals which are produced when tobacco is burned in a traditional cigarette. generally very helpful and only too happy to share their stories and their knowledge with others which is one reason that vaping forums can be so very popular and well attended. Fuse – A specially designed fuse for use in mechanical mods to prevent some types of battery failure. Fused Clapton – A Clapton coil that has two or more wires in the core of it as opposed to one in a regular clapton coil. G Glassomizer – A clearomizer that uses glass rather than plastic for the tank. Examples would be the Kanger Protank. e-smoking - This is a term that was used more in the past, to describe vaping and tended to be used by those who still considered themselves to be smokers even if they were exclusive vapers. EV - electronic (or electric) vapouriser. Probably the most accurate term for an e-cigarette, but not widely used maybe because it is not nearly as catchy or so easily understood as e-cigarette. F Filler Material (often simply abbreviated as ‘filler’) – This is absorbant material which is placed inside of a cartridge in order to keep the liquid inside of the cartridge and regulate the flow of the liquid to the atomiser while also ensuring that no flooding occurs. Flavour Cartridge – Another term for a cartridge, containing nicotine and flavours. Flooding – Flooding is something which can occur when too much e-liquid is placed into the atomizer. The main indicator of flooding is a gurgling sound and when flooding occurs the performance of the atomizer can also be negatively affected. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) – An administrative branch of the United States government that oversees rules and regulations pertaining to the safety of food and drug products sold in the USA. Formaldehyde – Formaldehyde can be produced much like acrolein; when e-liquid is heated to incredibly high temperatures. Also a known human carcinogen. Forums – There are a growing number of forums dedicated to vaping, from small to large. The most popular one for the vaping community is the ECF, or Electronic Cigarette Forum. Vapers are GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) – This acronym was created by the FDA so that people can know that the product that they are using is considered safe. Grub Screw – A type of screw used in atomizer posts where the tip is pointed to better secure wires. Gurgling - A sign too much refill has been added or it has obstructed the central air channel in the device being used. H Heatsink – Heatsinks are fins or protrusions on a mod, atomizer or drip tip designed to dissipate heat by allowing more airflow over more surface area. Heat steeping – Heat steeping is the process of speeding up steeping by placing one’s e-liquid container in a hot water bath or in a hot environment for any length of time. High Resistance (HR) – An atomizer or cartomizer with a higher ohm rating than the standard equipment. This allows you to apply higher voltage to the coil. Hit – The inhalation of vapour. Hot Spot – Areas of excess heat on the atomizer coil. Hot Spots are a known cause of dry hits and vapers take great care to avoid hot spots when building their coils. HV – High Voltage/device that operates above the standard 3.7 volts. High Voltage Vaping or High Powered Vaping – An advanced vaping technique which produces hotter vapour and requires less draw to produce the same amount of vapour. HV Mod – A dual battery or boosted supply mod (modification) to allow higher power vaping. VAPOUROUND MAGAZINE ISSUE 03 219
