Sr. High Project Showcase

Project Name: The Beacon Publication

Summary: EAST students choose to utilize Joomag as the host of the newly released updated electronic version of the Beacon publication. Students worked with Joomag representatives to learn the format of the site. EAST students are responsible for composing articles accompanied by three related pictures as well as a video piece to accompany each submission. The articles are geared towards student and patron interest. The publication is linked to the district website and is published each semester. The electronic, interactive version of the Beacon has been well received and is a quality communication tool between the school and the community.

Project Name: Building Better Blazers

Summary: EAST students hosted a Make a Wish event during a home basketball game and joined the efforts of the VVHS Band, PTA, Dance Team, and Cheerleaders. Students designed releases for social media, posters, and stickers for the event. An audio commercial was also produced and played at the event highlighting our wish representative who was in attendance at the game. The event totaled over $3,700 and was a fantastic example of coordinating student talents and energy for a central cause.

EAST students also designed and published sets of instructional posters for the Valley View Pre-K early literacy program. The posters featured nursery rhymes and where designed with large font and attractive illustrations. The teachers were delighted to have these resources to add to their instructional materials.

EAST students also work with the early elementary teachers weekly to provide instructional support to students who may be falling behind academically in reading and math. Students work in small groups or one on one under the supervision of the classroom teacher. The gift of time from the EAST students has shown increases in the targeted students performance and self confidence.

Mrs. Kelly Green, Special Education teacher has also served as a partner for EAST students this year. Students have helped to prepare instructional materials for special needs students making picture cards for word association as well as helping to plan the Best Buddies Prom.

Each of these project presented growth experiences for students in the form of service learning and had a far reaching impact helping to “Build Better Blazers!”
