Historical records tell us that London was bombarded by the German Luftwaffe for fifty- seven nights consecutively (starting in May 1941, date on which both the House of Commons and Westminster Hall were both hit and were prey to the flames), sporadic raids continued until mid-1941 with extensive damages to buildings and people. Estimates indicate staggering figures involving buildings and people, i.e., approximately 40,000 casualties (civilians) and about a million houses/buildings that were either damaged or entirely destroyed.
