Vadnais Lake Area Water
Management Organization is a
local government agency that uses
science and partnerships to protect
and enhance water resources within
our 25 square mile watershed
district.
A recent example of this
collaboration between private
business, local government and
contractors is the new Vadnais
Heights Goodwill, completed
fall 2017 at Centerville Road,
south of Hwy 96. The project
goal was to develop the land
parcel, which had a long history
of failed development attempts
and unlawful filling of a wetland
on the site, to meet the needs and
requirements of both the business
and the Wetland Conservation Act.
Custom underground storage
basins, tree trenches, raingardens,
and redesigned wetlands were
utilized to collect and treat
stormwater on-site, which
eventually drains to Vadnais Lake
and impacts the community’s
drinking water. The collaborative
development process coordinated
six different agencies and thirteen
draft plans. Ultimately, the project
was deemed a win-win for all
constituents involved, turning
a former problem site into an
asset for the commu nity and the
watershed.
VLAWMO also adds value to
our community by funding cost-
share grants for smaller projects
impacting our local water quality.
Businesses, organizations and
residents can apply for grants
that can pay up to 75 percent of
labor and materials when native
plantings are used to improve
water infiltration, lessen runoff and
provide wildlife habitat through
shoreline restorations, raingardens
and prairie landscapes.
