I love your enormous smiles and shouts of “We are finally here!” as a cheery “Glad you are here! Welcome back!” echoes from our sunlit young people as they give you your keys and welcome bags. Fifty years ago you arrived in block-long Chevy station wagons with wood trim on the sides and stowed in the back were canvas rafts and Styrofoam boards for riding the waves (yep, we also used Styrofoam cooler lids in a pinch). Twenty years ago you journeyed to the coast in minivans loaded down with pint size kid bikes and small boogie boards. Now, more often than not, you are navigating an SUV and it is immediately obvious that every family member, from grandparents down to parents and, of course, the kids, is athletic, fit and ready to have days filled with family adventures. Crayola colored kayaks are strapped to the roof, hybrid bikes ready to tackle the Emerald Isle bike paths or hard packed beach are mounted on the tailgate, and right behind you in the next vehicle is a young couple sporting two paddle boards for gliding Bogue Sound or skimming just beyond the breakers. Surf boards, there are always so many surf boards… long board for the “dad bod,” lightning quick smaller boards for the teens and tweens, and body boards in every hue for toddlers to grownups. Others are pulling 19 foot center console boats perfect for discovering our smaller, nearby barrier islands and hauling in a fresh catch of flounder, blues and puppy drum. Although chilling under a beach umbrella with my favorite family nearby for conversation will never lose its charm, on our recent cousin’s week over 40 members of our extended family gathered on the beach for long summer days full of surfing, paddle boarding, Ultimate Frisbee Kan Jam, soccer and football. With 10 young ‘uns under the age of 12, plus two teen age boys, numerous moms, dads, aunties and uncles, grandmas and granddads, we encamped by the sea for our daily adventures. Blessed with day after day of sunny perfection, calm seas and blissful breezes, we were given a glimpse of heaven on our final day together, Saturday. The Atlantic Ocean was beribboned that day with streaks of deepest navy, vibrant Caribbean turquoise, and the most delicious honeydew hued green. The waves were shyly lapping but still ride-able for our young surfers and body boarders. Our fifteen year old young men stood tall on their paddleboards and with great sweeping strokes of their paddles flew to the horizon and back again, returning with starry eyed tales of the colonies of luminous sea creatures they had seen through the crystalline ocean waters on this most divine day of days. Hearts beating in rhythm with the sea, hearts soaring with the joy of pure animal adrenaline, hearts gathered in a family circle by the sea. Julia Batten Wax
