V-Day Annual Report 2016 - ONE BILLION RISING: RISE FOR REVOLUTION 1 | Page 46
The grant to the The Lumad (Indigenous) communities in the Philippines will support
their struggle for the Defense of Land, the Environment, and Human Rights that brings
voices of concern on mining-affected communities and the attacks on environment
defenders. Against these threats to land and life in the Mindanao region, the Lumads
continue the valiant commitment to defend the environment and national patrimony,
resisting plunder and terror driven by corporate mining. Part of these threats have been
the destruction of the Lumad schools, depriving thousands of Lumad children their right
to education and future.
V-Day’s support will fund the building and running of three schools
in the Mindanao region. Part of the curriculum of the schools is
the Integration of Women’s and Children’s rights, and Rights of
Indigenous Women and Children in particular, as well as alternative
education on political advocacy and self-organization, preservation
of cultural identity, and innovative and sustainable livelihood
