Research has shown over and over again that the best way to learn is by doing. A recent story on NPR entitled “On The Lesson Plan: Make Stuff. Fail. Learn While You're At It,” explored the trend of learning by doing and making. The ideas expressed in this article are very similar to UVU’s focus of ‘Engaged Learning.’ Students of UVU are encouraged to gain real-world experience while gaining an education. Internships are a great way to gain experience in specific fields and find what type of work suits you the best. Internships provide a way to learn by doing, in addition to learning in the classroom.

In his interview with NPR, Dale Dougherty, an expert on the learning-by-doing and “maker” trends, said, “A maker space... can be out in the community. It has tools and materials. It's a place where you get to make things based on your interest and based on what you're learning to do.” Internships can become our “maker spaces.” We can go into the PR community and gain experience by making things, things that we can then add to our portfolios and to our resumes.
