but that. Yoon knew how to
deliver the punchline without
making another cliché, sappy
teenage love story. I believe
what she wanted to share with us
was more than just an inspiration
of her own relationship with
her husband, since she’s from
Jamaica (as Natasha), and he’s
from Korea (same as Daniel).
This story is endlessly hopeful yet
still grounded to reality, what
makes it all the more special.
Still not convinced? Allow me to
try harder then. The chapters are
of course from both characters
POVs, but what is exceptional
here is that you will stumble
upon
short
informational
chapters thrown in between
them. They include anything
from the meaning of the word
“Irie” (a Jamaican word) , to an
interesting explanation of Half
Life when it comes to different
aspects of science. Oh yeah, no
joke.
What also makes it a grea t read,
are the background stories of the
minor characters. They had such
a colossal impact on the book;
they contributed on transmitting
the alluring message behind it.
My personal favorite part is the
whole idea of multiple universes,
how one choice can lead to a
new bunch of choices, therefore
a new universe. The belief of
what is meant to happen, will at
last happen. However, allow me
to include one tiny flaw about
this book, it’s the fact that it was
based off of the concept of
instant love. The story revolves
in less than 24 hours, Daniel and
Natasha spend most of this time
together, but they both feel
the unexplainable connection
between them. Personally, I find
this kind of novels dubious and
distant from everyday life. Yet
somehow, Yoon’s peerless way
of writing made the whole thing
almost real. You’ll feel like you
knew these characters before.
And at some point you’re going
to get associated with at least
one of them, if not all.
