TECH TIP – Hydraulic Sawmill Maintenance

Adjustment of the hydraulic power strip , positive contact block , and ground contact block must be maintained in order to avoid the loss of hydraulic function . All hydraulic sawmills ( excluding LT70 electric and LT70 Super ) have a hydraulic power strip , positive contact block , and ground block . Use the steps below to keep your hydraulic sawmill running at its best .

HYDRAULIC POWER STRIP AND POSITIVE CONTACT BLOCK ADJUSTMENT
1 . Inspect the contact strip located on the outer side of the main frame on LT35 , LT40 , and LT50 Hydraulic sawmills . LT70 Hydraulic ( excluding LT70 electric and LT70 Super ) sawmills have two contact strips on the front and rear outer side of the main frame . If the strip is pitted badly it will need to be replaced . If it is in good condition , use fine grit sand paper and an emery cloth or steel wool to clean the strip . ( See Figure 1 )
Figure 1
2 . Inspect the positive contact block located to the right of the fuse box . The block is ¾ ” wide when new . If the block is worn at an angle or is about ½ ” wide , it will need to be replaced . ( See Figure 2 )
3 . If the positive contact block is free of wear , loosen the adjustment nuts just enough to allow the bracket to slide in and out . ( See Figure 3 ) a . Slide the bracket away from the strip so the contact block is not touching the strip . b . Slide the bracket in toward the strip until the contact block touches the strip . c . Push the bracket in about 1 / 8 " further to apply spring pressure on the contact block d . Retighten the adjustment nuts . ( See Figure 3 ) e . Verify the contact block has a smooth transition on and off the strip .

HYDRAULIC GROUND CONTACT BLOCK ADJUSTMENT
1 . Inspect the lower welded rod for dirt or rust . ( See figure 1 ) A rusty or dirty welded rod will cause the ground block to not make a good ground contact . This in turn will cause other areas of the saw mill to become the ground source for the hydraulic system and could damage those parts .
2 . Inspect the ground contact block for wear . The block is 3 / 4 " ( 19mm ) tall when new . If the block is worn at an angle or the block is about 1 / 2 ” ( 12.7mm ) tall , it will need to be replaced . ( See Figure 2 )
3 . If the block is good , verify the block has 1 / 8 ” ( 3.175mm ) to 3 / 16 ” ( 4.76mm ) spring pressure . If not use the mounting bolts and nuts to set this spring pressure ( See Figure 3 )

ALERT !
For LT40 and LT50 model sawmill owners , please inspect your cylindrical drive bearing and fluid levels annually . The clear tube can discolor and look like you have appropriate fluid levels when you do not . The tube can also become brittle and leak causing your bearing to run dry and fail . If the tube looks broken , brittle , or discolored , replace the tube with Part # 016394 .
* Earlier cylindrical bearings do not have tube .
