Nix Top 6 fun picks for June By Nicole Morrison-Mathern Co-owner, URL Radio On May 23rd I posed the question “What does Bismarck-Mandan NEED (business/service), and got an overwhelming response via comments, likes, messages & even phone calls. The information gathered makes up this month’s Nix Six list. 6 More parks, green space & indoor arboretum. 5 Roller Rink, people want to rock & roll (literally). So many people have memories of Bismarck’s old Wheel-a-While. I know my lasting memory is breaking up with my 7th grade boyfriend because I had a crush on the exchange student & wanted to do the slow song skate with him instead. Stacy Sturm has dreamed of bringing this place of memories back to life so please hit her up with support if you would like to see it come to fruition. 4 Better Taxi/Transit Service/Uber – I don’t know how many times I have had to crawl out of bed and pick people up because their taxi didn’t show up, or how many people I’ve seen almost miss their flight because their taxi never arrived to bring them to the airport. Another concern was transporting those with wheel chairs – it sounds like they need a 24 hr lead time to make this happen at the time being. 3 Food, Food, Food – In order by popularity: Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Red Pepper, Joes Crab Shack, iHop, Sonic, Rumbi’s, Tokyo Joe, Spicy Pickle, Freshens, Dave & Busters, Gourmet Hot Dogs, Egg & I, Outback Steak House, Popeye’s, Dick’s Burgers, In & Out Burger & Culvers. Undoubtedly Whole Foods is my absolute favorite place to eat dinner. Every time I’m in Phoenix we go to the Scottsdale’s Whole Foods – pick out what we want cooked fresh for us from either the meat or fish department, grab a bottle of wine & sit in their little bar area & take back the awesome atmosphere. 2 Indoor multipurpose sports complex – many people had a desire for an indoor soccer complex and multi-sport center. Others also mentioned an indoor children’s play area such as the one in Williston. With winter taking up nearly 50% of our year in ND this is something that is definitely necessary. 1 Venues – whether it’s for music, under 21 events, improv/ comedy, discount movies, Teen Center, LBGT community center or Book Bar - the community undoubtedly wants more options for whole family evening entertainment. Some honorable mentions were: Food delivery on the river, IMAX, Indoor place to walk dogs, valet services, and children’s stores. 32 Sushi: Your Summer Weight loss Friend By Stacy Sturm URL Radio Staff Writer It’s an elegant dinner or date. It’s a fun girls night out. Office workers are grabbing it to go. High schoolers are packing it for lunch. Business people are networking and sealing deals to it. It’s even available in grocery stores like Dan’s now. Sushi is stylish and delicious, and could actually be providing more than just a tasty lunch. Scientists believe it is one of the reasons why the Japanese are among the most healthy people in the world. On average, the Japanese diet - raw fish, vegetables and rice contains only 30pc fat, most of it is the healthier polyunsaturated variety, compared with 40pc in Britain. Kobe’s Japanese Steak house and Sushi Owner, Kobe, agrees, “It’s a good healthy eating option. Very lean. Good fats. Many people don’t eat out because they’re trying to lose weight or get healthy. But they will eat here.” Fish is generally a good food for weight loss because it provides protein without a lot of fat or calories. A study published in the International Journal of Obesity in 2014 found that participants who included fish as part of a reduced-calorie diet lost about 2 pounds more in four weeks than those who didn’t eat any fish. The American Heart Association recommends eating fish or seafood about twice a week and choosing those varieties lowest in mercury, which include salmon, shrimp, catfish, clams, flounder, scallops, crab and pollock. Avoid shark, tilefish and king mackerel, the types of fish highest in mercury. Eating fish creates lower numbers in other aspects of health too, including cholesterol and blood pressure. Heart disease rates in Japan are among the lowest in the world. Recently, scientists in Japan found that sushi could even protect smokers against lung cancer. Professor Toshiro Takezaki, who led the study, says, “Japanese people love fresh fish, particularly sushi. We think that is why, even though the Japanese smoke as much as people in other countries, their rate of lung cancer is only two-thirds as high.” The Cancer Research Campaign believes giving up smoking is the biggest preventive step, but says a high consumption of fresh fish and vegetables does lower the risk. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish are linked to heart protection and improved circulation. Even the wasabi has health benefits. Scientists in Japan have discovered compounds called isothiocyanates in the paste that can help prevent tooth decay. Wasabi has also been found to aid cancer prevention and prevent blood clots, if eaten regularly. Another popular garnish with sushi is ginger. This spice is widely known to have therapeutic effects, not least in aiding digestion, and is often recommended to ward off nausea. It is also thought to protect against respiratory illnesses and colds, as well as to ease flatulence and IBS. To the right are the healthiest rolls and their typical nutritional information.
