At the moment, it has high rates of unemployment and I wanted to create a design which would aid people not only to gain skills but hopefully work within an industry to eventually gain employment. The building itself is a public to private facility with a separation between the two’s activities and areas. However, I designed the layout in such a way that takes users on a symbolic journey which represents the four stages of progress. To achieve my designs aspirations, this building would have to attract established designers from the fashion industry whilst also providing an excellent learning environment for students. The design features a balcony bar, a start-up store, an exhibition space, a prototyping room amongst other features. All of these culminate to provide a platform for professionals and students to benefit from each other. 142-144 Streatham Hill Lambeth, London SW2 4UR 92 DAWN “The first appearance of light in the sky before sunrise.” Users are introduced to the beginning of the building and journey in this stage. They are welcomed by information/ticket booths and the public balcony bars hospitality. This signifies the beginning of our journey where it is available to anyone. EMBARK “To begin a course of action.” The second stage of our journey is one of new possibilities. Students/Users must sign up to use the facilities of this stage. This includes the workshops and prototyping rooms. A purposeful commitment is made when signing up and opens a different side of the building up to users. METAMORPHOSIS “A change of the form or nature of a thing or person into a completely different one.” The penultimate stage signifies change and is mostly aimed towards the students of the fashion hub. After benefitting from the guidance of industry professionals and honing their skills, students should be at a level where they can produce work to compete at a consumer level. The startup and established fashion stores arrive at this stage. APOTHEOSIS “The highest point in the development of something; a culmination or climax.” This area is the final stage of the users journey and houses the theatre/exhibition space. It represents a celebration of the hard work that came in the stages beforehand and gives an insight into the fashion world.
