BUILDING THE
HMS BEAGLE
Located in the heart of Woolwich,
The King’s Dock aims to
establish an international
centre of excellence for historic
shipbuilding and restoration
in line with our aim to create a
lasting legacy for the historic
dockyard.
The proposal also includes
creating a museum and
interpretation centre of the history
of the Royal Dockyard. This
would complement the National
Maritime Museum in Greenwich
and the Museum of London
Docklands.
The museum would be able
to display those artefacts held
by the Lewisham Local History
Archive, in addition to part of the
collection held in storage by the
National Maritime Museum that
relates specifically to Woolwich,
bringing the history of the site
alive for local residents and
visitors to have pride in. The
community will also be able to
witness all of the crafts employed
in historic shipbuilding. There will
also be opportunities for more
widespread participation in the
construction process, through
adult and higher education
courses.
