Peckham Rye Station
- A platform for change
How does a characterful
‘urban village’ maintain its
quirky edge as it responds to
the inevitable development of
the modern city?
My project imagines a future
Peckham by focusing on the
refurbishment of Peckham
Rye Station, creating a
characterful threshold to a
revitalised area and a symbol
for the preservation of spirit in
a time of change.
A vibrantly paced townsquare defined by newly
colonised railway arches,
frames the refurbished 19th
century railway station. Inside,
the once hidden original
waiting room lives again,
re-interpreted to satisfy the
essential needs of the 21st
century commuter, a theatre
of exuberant everyday life
where preening passengers
become performers for
an audience of time-out
travellers.
