phresher Emerging Brooklyn rap star, Phresher talks career, mentoring, and representing New York’s largest bourough. Can you tell us what piqued your interest in music—how you got started rapping? I got started in music through being exposed to it by my father. My dad is actually a musician. He had his own label, so I had a lot of time to play around with beats. I happened to make a good one, and he told me I should pursue it. That is how I got my start. Are there genres of music other than rap that inspire you? I love pop, R & B, and rock and roll. If I could sing I would be a singer, seriously. The passion that you hear in rock and roll, the intensity---that’s everything for me. According to what we know about you, you live a clean lifestyle. You don’t drink or smoke? How important is being a positive role model to the younger generation to you? Oh no, I don’t drink or smoke—at all. Being a positive influence, that’s paramount for me. I coach kids in football and basketball. Showing the kids that you don’t have to do negative things to be seen or noticed. Just be yourself. I am always preaching to them to be yourself. I hang around a bunch of drinkers and smokers but that is not something that I choose to do. It doesn’t matter. I show them that you can still be the cool guy without all of that, look at me. What are you working on in the studio currently? I am working on my mixtape. I don’t have a title yet, but I am leaning towards Can’t Wait No More. We will figure it out. Wait a minute was cool, but I am very excited about this. Now its time! I can’t tell you enough how excited I am about this one. URBAN | 59
