LADUMA NGXOKOLO Laduma Ngxokolo won the 2015 Vogue Italia scouting for Africa prize allowing him to showcase his collection at the Palazzo Morando Show in Milan, Italy aduma Ngxokolo is one of Africa’s finest knitwear designers and innovators of the Xhosa (one of the South African dominant ethnic group) inspired knitwear brand MAXHOSA BY LADUMA. Ngxokolo established the brand in 2011 with a desire to explore knitwear design solutions that would be suitable for the amakrwala (Xhosa initiates) traditional dress. How has your local brand impacted the international market? It has impacted positively in a lot of ways, I’ve created a lot of awareness about the Xhosa culture, many people abroad didn’t even know that we have cold winters in South Africa. When will the collection be available in stores? Marketing my brand overseas has been one of the best experiences for me, from teaching people how to pronounce MAXHOSA and my last name to sharing the story behind my knitwear. Tell us about your preparations for the Africa International Fashion week coming up in Lagos, Nigeria in December? The latest menswear collection has already unveiled a few touch points in terms of what the womenswear collection is about as well, it will be more or less the same styles but translated into feminine versions, I think it is very important for them to correlate.
