Poets Cove

Concrete

By Rasheedah Moseley
She lives in a lonely world speaking fluently about sex , drugs and pain mixed in with Christianity . Day in and day out just sitting in her kitchen toasting to her triumph crying over the dinner table because she has to eat alone another night . Searching for love under her pillowcase . Remember our situation , no money , no food ?! More money more problems , I guess this is us all being friendly . Twiddling our thumbs and rocking back and forth thinking about the back and forth and the history in our struggles . She says , “ I never meant to deny you , I just didn ’ t know the poor people ’ s version of love growing up ” so instead she sat quiet , presumably at peace with everything . Lonely girl If you like to date maybe we can grab a movie and forget about the chaos at home . The violence in our streets and the politicians politicing on what to do with us next when we ’ ve already found the eject button to let ourselves out . They say war on terrorism so we hide from Muslims . Grandma watches the news . They say war on drugs so we fill the tub with the white cocaine they inflicted on our mother ’ s , brothers , fathers whose grandparents names we never knew because he never knew . We bathe in it . In between the highs and all the goodbyes , we managed to rise with no food on the table , momma was able with clothes on our backs . Frozen in the moment as we grew through the concrete just to learn that thorns hurt . Roses to ashes . Still we rise to speak about the parts of us naturally grown stronger from the roots of our ancestry . Yet and still comes the “ have a nice day ” with a forced smile of some John Doe who considers it a compliment to throw a girl a bone so she feels more like a female dog than a queen . The past is here twiddling thumbs and rocking back and forth waiting on the next man to be the next man . What happens to his lonely mother ? Who hands her the spoon ?
