New Year's Day is considered to be the most celebrated public holiday around the world. Many activities actually take place on New Year’s Eve with fireworks at the stroke of midnight as the new year starts in each time zone. A big tradition is making New Year's resolutions. Many make a meal on New Year’s Day of hog jowls, black eyed peas and collared greens to insure good fortune in the coming year. Robert E Lee Day Robert E. Lee’s birthday, known as Robert E. Lee Day, is a state holiday in some parts of the United States. Lee’s first military action after graduation from West Point was in 1845 in the war with Mexico. He was appointed superintendent of West Point in 1852 and is considered one of the best superintendents in the . As a scientist, he was a major figure in the American Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. As an inventor, he is known for the lightning rod, bifocals and the Franklin stove, among other inventions. He facilitated Philadelphia's fire department and the University of Pennsylvania. Franklin earned the title of The First American. George Washington’s Birthday Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. It can occur on the 15th through the 21st of February depending on the year. The day is now known as Presidents' Day and is often an occasion to honor the incumbent president and all persons who have served as president. Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday Abraham Lincoln’s birthday Feb. 12 is a state holiday in most states and has never been a federal holiday. According to folklore, if it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then the spring season will arrive early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its den and winter weather will persist for six more weeks.
