Election Day Not traditionally known as a holiday, Election Day in November is considered an important day for American citizens who care about their freedom to chose who they wish to be in charge of the government from local cities and counties to the legislators in the state General Assembly and Governor’s seat to those who serve in Congress and the White House. Election Day is held in November on the first Tuesday of the month after the first Monday of month. In recent years, early voting days were created to allow more people time to vote. Voters typically vote in what is known as primaries earlier in the year and chose a candidate who will represent a political party in the General Election in November. The three major parties are Republicans, Democrats and Libertarians. Veterans Day Veterans's Day honors all members of the Armed Forces - Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard - who serve the United States of America. They stand ready to protect the nation and preserve the way of life Americans have grown to expect. Veterans give their time and talent and effort. Many have been involved in combat and many have made the ultimate sacrifice. The holiday was originally known as Armistice Day and was first celebrated in 1921. On November 11 at 11:11 (the eleventh month, eleventh day, eleventh hour, eleventh minute) in 1921 the United States, England and France and England each buried an unknown soldier in honor of those who died in World War I. This began the annual Armistice Day holiday. The time and day was picked because fighting ceased in World War I in 1918 on November 11 at 11:11. President Eisenhower changed it to Veteran's Day in 1954. A Veterans Day event is held in Union County in Blairsville each year with a traditional dinner involving the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Georgia Office of Veterans Services, American Legion Auxiliary and others. The event lasted for three days. Life for the early settlers was difficult and the fall harvest was a time to celebrate having a good crop by offering prayer to God. The Pilgrims and the Indians held a feast with animals, fowl, fruits and vegetables. Turkey is now the main meat for the meal with a wide variety of food. Some traditional foods replicate the All Saint's Day on Nov. 1 honors and recognizes all of the saints of the Christian church, many of which were martyrs. United States Marine Corps Day is celebrated on Nov. 10. The Marine Corps were created during the Revolutionary War. Saddie Hawkin’s Day on Nov. 13 was created in a cartoon. The mayor of Dogpatch in the 1930s was desperate to marry off his ugly daughter. A race was held and all the single men were chased by single women. If a girl catches her man, he had to marry her.
