The Butternut Creek Festival has been designated as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Society for 10 years. Musical entertainment, live art demonstrations and a variety of food were among the features of the event. Local artists and craftsmen display and sell their items. The more than 15,000 attending this year acquired treasurers and memories. The event exceeded the 10,000 to 14,000 local residents and visitors in recent years. All applicants are juried. Limiting participation is done to ensure quality and diversity. There were 76 vendors with a variety of items including fine art, basketry, fabric art, decorative painting, glass, metal working, jewelry, photography, pottery, scrimshaw, and wood turning. High Country Artisans fulfills its goal to promote quality craftsmen and artists in the region through exhibitions and demonstrations and to support art programs in the community. The Artisans have promoted, improved and expanded arts for many in the north Georgia mountain community with their focus to conserve and enhance the rich heritage of all areas of traditional arts and crafts by encouraging an appreciation of arts and crafts. High Country Artisans is an all- volunteer non-profit organization with C CC By Norm Cooper Editor, Union County GA Magazine Photos from Butternut Creek Festival Website no paid staff. Membership is open to anyone who has a love and appreciation of the arts. A talented decorative painter, a master wood craftsman and a stained glass artist dreamed an impossible dream. Having participated in arts and crafts shows throughout the Southeast for several years, they had experienced numerous poorly organized and badly run shows, but only rarely, had they been privileged Colwell Construction to encounter what they considered to be a quality arts and crafts festival. In 1997 the three individuals formed the High Country Artisans to promote quality art work in the north Georgia mountains. Their major activity was their version of a well organized, well run, well attended, quality arts and crafts festival named The Butternut Creek Festival. The formula for success has been a beautiful natural setting offering Blairsville shade and comfort for those exhibiting and attending, screening of all exhibitors of multiple artistic categories and limiting the number of exhibitors, live musical entertainment, free admission and free parking. Community support has been a vital part of the success since the first show in 1998, with the Blairsville/Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Recreation Department being major supporters of the festival. Throughout the years, the festival has grown in quality, size and attendance. The community base expanded as additional major sponsors joined. The sponsors are listed in the organization’s website. The festival funded the construction of a new performing gazebo in the exhibitor area prior to the 2006 Festival. A proclamation was presented in 2008 recognizing the Butternut Creek Festival and it's founding members. The event is held every year on the third weekend in July. The founders and those who continue to volunteer have proven “if you dream big, work hard and have dedicated supporters, you can truly achieve the impossible.” The website for the organization and the event is online at www.butternutcreekfestival.com. The site has the names of organizers, members and a detailed history. It has photos of this year’s event.
