This festival of light is celebrated all
over Thailand, and is no less exciting
in Surat Thani where the Tapi River
is the focal point of the celebrations.
The festival, which pays homage to
the goddess of water, sees visitors
and locals launching thousands of
beautifully decorated lotus-shaped
rafts on to the water, illuminated by
glittering candles.
It is reported that this festival came
about hundreds of years ago after
a visiting Chinese opera group
became ill with malaria but survived
by abstaining from eating meat to
purify the mind and body. Today
it’s an annual event that, as well as
celebrating vegetarianism, is a chaotic
festival of colourful processions and
fire walking.
