Editors’ Note
Welcome to this second issue of Under Construction @ Keele. Following from our
first edition, we have accepted a number of paper proposals, again welcoming
pieces which bring together various interdisciplinary connections. Having learned
from the first publication, we have established a number of professional processes.
We have put in place clearer deadlines and objectives and this has resulted in an
expansion of the team, including a number of new appointments, with James
Williamson as Publicist and Kimberley Braxton as Communications Secretary. Our
two new editorial appointments are Akua Adjeiwaa Asomani-Adem and Amy
Coquaz. We also welcomed Gemma Scott in the position of Editor in Chief. The hard
work put in by all team members means that the journal has developed into an
ampler enterprise, which we are very excited about.
Once again, we are delighted to present an engaging set of theoretical
articles, written by Humanities and Social Sciences postgraduate students here at
Keele University. Contributions range from a number of critical insights, including an
assessment of consumption practices and generational differences, the application
of a philosophical methodology to construct a social history of state responses to
‘deviant women’ in the semi-penal institutions of Liverpool, an exploration into the
value of happiness through a science-fiction animated sitcom and the application of
Foucault’s notion of political killings to Athol Fugard’s Swize Bansi is Dead. We are
even more delighted to expand the range of journal content with two book reviews,
both on the theme of popular music. One looks at a publication which combines
Black Metal Rock and Ecology and the other reviews a new Broadway musical.
We would like to thank Gemma for her excellent flowchart organisation skills
and the rest of the team for their hard work and dedication in attracting and
promoting high quality submissions. After the last issue, our expectations were high
and we are confident that they have been met in this new collection of original
contributions. ]
