These characters exist in a very colourful, kinetic show set on a wide variety
of planets featuring alien races who ‘defy all logic’.3 However, the show always
allows its characters’ sadness to supersede the weirdness of the worlds around
them. The episode Auto Erotic Assimilation (Series Two, Episode Three)4 features
Rick meeting an ex-girlfriend (a hive mind named Unity) and having a planet-wide
orgy with her, at one point sky-diving into a football stadium wearing a crotch-less
Uncle Sam costume; it then ends with Rick having driven Unity away and drunkenly
attempting suicide due to the ensuing lonelines ˈH\\
