BBSRC supports environments to drive and accelerate innovation , growth , and impact from bioscience

The Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council works with partners to support the development of five national research and innovation campuses at sites across the UK , with seven of its strategically-funded institutes embedded within them . These environments foster early-stage innovation , accelerating excellent research into tangible social and economic benefits .
BBSRC invests in excellent bioscience research , innovation , training , and research infrastructure to sustain the UK ’ s world-leading bioscience base and support Government objectives for science and innovation .
In 2015-16 , BBSRC invested £ 473m in excellent bioscience that can help society to tackle major challenges in health , nutrition , energy , and materials and food security .
BBSRC investments underpin a growing and prosperous UK bioeconomy , including sectors such as agriculture , food and drink , industrial biotechnology , and healthcare ; support evidence-based policy-making ; provide
the training and skills the UK needs ; and enable the UK to continue to compete globally .
The five national research and innovation campuses , developed by BBSRC and its partners , form a vital component of the UK innovation ecosystem . Each campus is centred on a critical mass of world-leading bioscience , strategically supported by BBSRC . The aim of each campus is to provide a unique environment where business , and other users , can co-locate to access specialist facilities and exchange ideas with researchers , leading to the creation of a vibrant and enterprising environment to drive and accelerate bioscience innovation .
The campuses share some common features with science parks , but are a distinct subset with unique features , including the following :
• Internationally leading , long-term research base and national capability
• Research Council long-term commitment , and influence , on behalf of the UK
• Co-location of business and academia enabling access to specialist facilities and exchange of knowledge .
The campuses make a variety of important impacts for the UK , enabling economic growth , contributing to interactions with important international trading partners , and supporting key economic sectors .
The five national research and innovation campuses are :
• Babraham Research Campus : a hub of bioscience and biomedical research and innovation
• Norwich Research Park : a multidisciplinary research and business community with a focus on agribiotech , industrial biotech , food , health and microbiome , med biotech and genomics
• Easter Bush Research and Innovation Campus : a campus for research and innovation in animal sciences and food security
• Rothamsted Centre for Research and Enterprise : a global centre for collaborative research and innovation in agri-tech
• Aberystwyth Innovation and Enterprise Campus : a developing centre offering product development partnership in agri-tech , food , and biofuels . ■
