Newcastle Science Central is North East England ’ s landmark location for science , business , living , and leisure . Spanning 24 acres of city-centre development land , it is designed to support a thriving community , rewarding jobs , and ground-breaking scientific advances . As one of the biggest urban regeneration projects of its kind in the UK , it is connecting and restoring previously run-down areas in Newcastle upon Tyne and creating a new urban quarter in the city centre . Combining cuttingedge architecture with new public spaces , world-renowned scientific expertise , and leading-edge companies , it offers an innovation community for investors , businesses , entrepreneurs , students , scientists , and citizens .

A long-term partnership between Newcastle City Council and Newcastle University , Newcastle Science Central secured one of the biggest deals seen in the city when the partnership secured Legal & General Capital as a long-term investment partner in June 2016 .
Legal & General have initially invested £ 65m , which will accelerate completion of two further buildings offering 20,000m 2 of Grade A office space , expected to create around 2,000 jobs , and will help unlock further investment in commercial and residential plots . The first of these is due to open in 2019 . These two office buildings , along with The Core , a 27,000 sq ft space for start-ups and SMEs , will form the gateway to Science Central .
The Core Newcastle Science Central ’ s landmark building , The Core , opened in November 2014 , with The Key following in February 2016 providing the first research labs on-site for Newcastle University . Located within The Core , the Cloud Innovation Centre allows businesses to develop partnerships with researchers from Newcastle University to maximise the opportunities of cloud technologies and big data analytics and test ideas .
Urban Sciences Building Opening in autumn 2017 , the building will create a new home for Newcastle University ’ s Institute for Sustainability and The School of Computing Science .
The building will house a number of ground-breaking projects including : a unique £ 2m grid-connected energy storage test bed in collaboration with Siemens ; the Urban Observatory , which will collect a diverse set of data from across the city of Newcastle ( measuring air quality , light , sound , and temperature ); and the Decision Theatre , a facility that enables advanced data visualisation so that policy makers and other stakeholders can plan and operate cities sustainably .
National Innovation Centres Also housed within the Urban Sciences Building will be the National Centre for Energy Systems and Integration . The £ 20m centre is crucial to improving energy efficiency , driving down customer bills , and reducing carbon emissions . A partnership between Newcastle University
