They can offer extended employment and post-retirement options such as volunteering. This adds productive value as well as enhancing social unity. The National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) will match the needs and demands of an ageing population, with world-leading science, technology and design. The Centre will bring together business, academia and the public to stimulate innovation of products and services that make older lives better. This will be achieved in an iconic new building, to be shared with innovation experts and businesses. Part-funded by the Medical Research Council, the building, open from 2020, will be at the heart of Newcastle Science Central. and geographic boundaries. The location will include public space, a range of hard and soft facilities available for businesses and the public to use, together with co-location space for businesses to rent. Businesses taking space will be prioritised against NICA’s key objectives. NICA will help businesses and organisations to innovate for an ageing society. Through their public network, the Centre will provide an understanding of potential customers and their needs. Though an extensive business network, the NICA team will identify partners to support the development of later stage prototypes. These can be tested and evaluated with the support of experienced researchers, who will also advise companies when searching for a route to market.
