encounters, the number eight seed
got his tournament off to the best
possible start with a 5-2 victory
over fellow Dutchman Remco
van Eijden, before completing
qualification by defeating Martin
Atkins 5-3.

In the groups opening encounter
Atkins had defeated van Eijden
5-3, but he was unable to
complete the job, ultimately
finishing second to Benito van de
Pas after the Dutchman defeated
him on Saturday evening.

Michel van der Hoorst produced
two of the tournaments biggest
shocks as he defeated first Scott
Waites and then Richie George to
reach the last eight.
The relatively unknown Dutchman
topped a group in which no-one
had given him a hope thanks to a
5-2 victory over Waites and a 5-4
victory over George. In the pool’s
other match Waites was able to
restore some pride by defeating
George 5-1.
