VISITING CIGAR PERSONALITY DANIEL MARSHALL On a recent European trip I got the opportunity to talk to the Californian Humidor and cigar ‘dude supreme’ Daniel Marshall. Here’s my interview: What came first for you, the cigar or the humidor? The Humidor was our first design in the DM collection. 1982 I made a thank you gift for my girlfriend’s grandfather who insisted that I borrow the money $15,000 to finish my dream sail boat from him and not the bank. I thought, what can I give a man that has everything and asked myself, what does he enjoy most, golf and Cigars... and while he was speaking to me that evening by his pool in his bel air mansion, he was enjoying a Dunhill Montecruz cigar... so, for two weeks I worked on a unique 3 cigar case in Teak wood that became my first patented design. He loved it and saw the vision, borrow it tomorrow, take it to Dunhill in Beverly Hills and they will buy it and you can have it all. Sail around the world, make cases for Dunhill, live the dream. And he was right. That’s what I did.... 32 years later... I launched and created the cigar collection in 1996 when we were travelling the country doing the Big Smokes with Cigar Aficionado Magazine. Customers would constantly ask, when are you going to make a cigar... we would buy it, and enjoy it the same way we enjoy the humidors we make, cause we know we can count on the best quality, the best construction and the finest flavours and experience. 7
