Year 9 in Zhangzhou, Fujian

This year, the Year 9 students went to the Fujian province to learn about the Hakka people. We, first of all, traveled to old Xiamen where we went to the Naputo Buddhist temple and played an exciting team game called the 'Go Game'. Over the next few days, we traveled to see a multitude of tulous and local Hakka people. We were lucky enough to stay at some of these UNESCO cultural wonders and enjoy sumptuous dishes prepared for us by the families who some had owned the tulous for almost 15 generations. During our stay, we went to an area called Chuxi where we learned about the history of the Hakka people throughout time at a tulou that had been converted into a huge museum. We also were fortunate enough to join some locals to experience how to cut rice stalks and how to make a sweet delight called Ciba. After cycling around to visit a scholar’s tulou to paint scenes that caught our eye and make our own miniature tulou out of the same mud that is used in the real thing. We ended our journey in Zhangzhou reflecting on our experiences before heading home to Guangzhou.
