Chinese Language Conference

Y6 ‘How the World Works’

Parents of Year 6 students enjoyed informative student presentations. Students shared deep scientific understandings of the cell as the building block of life. Groups then explained class experiments, the working of a microscope, cloning, stem cell research and much more. A highlight of the afternoon was ‘The Cell’ song. Learning the lyrics of this fun song greatly helps students understand the role of the parts of the cell. The grand finale was ‘The Great Debate’. Students impressed the audience with their knowledge of genetically modified food as they debated the ethical considerations. Huge congratulations to all year 6 students on a job well done!

Chinese Teachers Margie Wu and Jane Wen recently attended the 5th International School Chinese Language Education Conference held in Chang Shu, Jiangsu, China.

The theme of the conference was "Transcending Diversity through Multimodality of Teaching and Learning." University professors, senior educators, language teachers and students from twelve different countries shared their professional insights. Prestigious keynote speakers, Mr. Jin Yucheng, author of "Blossoms", which won the Mao Dun Literary Prize (2015), the most prestigious literature prize in China; Dr. Ian Hill, former Secretary-General of IBO and Ms. Jane Orton, an Honorary Fellow in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne and director of the Chinese Teacher Training Centre, enlightened and inspired participants. Collaborative workshops focused on the integration of IB philosophy with Chinese teaching and learning and how to promote visible thinking to improve students' critical capability. From theory to practice, from practice to reflection and reviewing, each workshop demonstrated the educators' professional knowledge and skills. It's never too late to learn (学无止境).

UISG proudly host the 2017 German Teachers’ Conference for educators from across China attended. Mr Dirk Lechelt from the German Consulate General Guangzhou opened the meeting along with our Head of School, Dr Michael Wylie.

The focus was on teaching and learning practices within international school programmes, the discussion of student competency levels and the exploring and exchanging resources. Mr. Richard Hopp, an expert on second-language learning (Deutsch als Zweitsprache) from the German School in Shanghai, shared richly how to support multi-lingual students. Ms Katrin Hertel and Ms Beate Maia were our very professional UISG conference facilitators.
