Our children live in a much different world than we did. It’s obvious. This major change has mainly come about because of technology. Facebook, SnapChat, weChat, and Instagram have changed the way our children interact with each other, with the way they learn and the way they view the world. With this, it’s critical that we, as parents and teachers, understand the importance of teaching our students how to navigate this new world of technology. While we aim to promote and nurture the appreciation of global citizenship, we must also strive to educate on being responsible digital citizens.

What does Digital Citizenship mean?

According to Mike Ribble, an author of books on the topic for both educators and parents, “digital citizenship can be defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible behaviour with regard to technology use.” This simple definition encompasses many skills in a rather complex, vast digital world.

With urgency, we should try our best to make our children understand that they have more resources available at their fingertips than any other generation, and, with these resources, comes great responsibility.
