Your study Psychology is the study of the mind, how people think, feel and behave. This study can be at an individual, group, organisational or community level. While a professional psychologist assesses, diagnoses and treats problems, having a psychological knowledge can also be directed towards understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human activity. This knowledge can be a very useful tool with many occupations. A selection of subjects for this course includes: Major overview This major is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the biological, social, and cultural factors which influence how humans think, feel, and behave. Please note, this course does not provide the qualifications to become a psychologist. Students can choose to combine this major with another Bachelor of Arts major (double major). To add further value it is possible to combine the Bachelor of Arts with another degree (see Joint degree opportunities). Major highlights JCU’s Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) places a strong emphasis on students being actively engaged in current research. The Department of Psychology also hosts a series of seminars each year that are presented by national and international experts, who provide the most current knowledge and research activity in various fields of Psychology. Professional recognition This major is offered to students who want an understanding of psychology, to combine with another area of study. Students wishing to register as psychologists should instead take the Australian Psychological Accreditation Council’s (APAC) 4-year Bachelor of Psychology, see page 36. Career opportunities Graduates of the non-accredited Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) major can pursue a diverse range of careers in government and human services organisations, business corporations, and the health sector.
