What is Psychology?
Your study
Psychology is the study of the mind, how people think, feel and behave.
This study can be at an individual, group, organisational or community
level. While a professional psychologist assesses, diagnoses and treats
problems, having a psychological knowledge can also be directed towards
understanding and solving problems in many different spheres of human
activity. This knowledge can be a very useful tool with many occupations.

Major overview
This major is designed to give students a deeper understanding of the
biological, social, and cultural factors which influence how humans
think, feel, and behave. Please note, this course does not provide the
qualifications to become a psychologist.
Students can choose to combine this major with another Bachelor of Arts
major (double major). To add further value it is possible to combine the
Bachelor of Arts with another degree (see Joint degree opportunities).
Major highlights
JCU’s Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) places a strong emphasis on students
being actively engaged in current research. The Department of Psychology
also hosts a series of seminars each year that are presented by national
and international experts, who provide the most current knowledge and
research activity in various fields of Psychology.
Professional recognition
This major is offered to students who want an understanding of
psychology, to combine with another area of study. Students wishing to
register as psychologists should instead take the Australian Psychological
Accreditation Council’s (APAC) 4-year Bachelor of Psychology, see page 36.
Career opportunities
Graduates of the non-accredited Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) major
can pursue a diverse range of careers in government and human services
organisations, business corporations, and the health sector. Psychology
and Arts qualifications are valuable in, for example, media, market
research, advertising, public relations and human resources.
