JCU was the best choice, as I had cultural and family
commitments and moving away for university was not an
option for me. Staying in a familiar place, with the ocean
close by, allowed me to retain my sense of cultural identity.
Although I began my university studies in Education, I
transferred to Humanities in my second year, majoring in
History and Australian Indigenous Studies. This perfectly
aligned me with my life interests.
During my time at JCU, I was involved with Indigenous
Youth Leadership Program (IYLP). Through IYLP I travelled
to Melbourne, meeting other young Indigenous peop B
