UF Housing Alumni Magazine Fall 2016 | Page 4

WELCOME FROM NORB 4 WELCOME TO FALL SEMESTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA! I also want to welcome you to our Fall 2016 Alumni Magazine! We asked many of you what you would like to see and read in the magazine, and this issue is reflective of your thoughts. This issue possesses a nice balance of articles from undergraduate to graduate and family housing; articles about students, staff, and alumni; the University of Florida and the City of Gainesville; and highlights of our student organizations. You will discover an article about President Fuchs and his wife living for one week in Jennings Hall for fall opening, an article about housing alumna Kathy Bush Hobgood, and updates on student alumni from the past four decades! There is also a wonderful article introducing you to the World Class Wireless Project – a project that will position campus housing as a national leader in technology support for our resident students. This fall, the University of Florida side-stepped Hurricane Matthew. The campus closed at 5:00 pm on Thursday and remained closed through Sunday in preparation for the anticipated catastrophic storm to hit Gainesville. We were very fortunate to have the hurricane stay just far enough to the east so that the high winds and tremendous rain forecasted did not impact Gainesville. As I write this welcome, the planning continues to reschedule the UF – LSU football game. I just want to thank all the staff who prepared campus for this storm and all the students who assisted in the preparations by taking care of their rooms and possessions. It is great to be a Gator and have everyone assist when it is necessary. As you read this magazine I am sure you will be excited about the many wonderful activities and events taking place at the University of Florida and within the Department of Housing and Residence Education. I hope if your travels bring you to Gainesville, you will stop by the Main Housing Office or your favorite area desk and visit us. We want you to see the many campus changes with new and renovated buildings. I look forward to hearing from you! Go Gators! Norbert W.
