U N I VE R SI T Y CO L L EG E DU B L I N CR E AT I NG VA LU E FROM K NOW L EDGE Introduction Excellence in research and innovation is central to all that we do in University College Dublin, underpinned by an outstanding base of scholarship across our wide range of disciplines. Building between these disciplines, we have developed multidisciplinary research programmes through which we can address challenges of global scale and significance. Our long-standing commitment to innovation is reflected in an environment that encourages the translation of creative research ideas into solutions addressing needs of the economy and society. All of these activities enrich the education delivered to UCD students, developing creative graduates to meet challenges of the future. This document provides an overview of the rich and diverse landscape of research and innovation in UCD. It outlines the scale and profile of our activities, providing facts and figures that go some way to conveying the excellence and impact of this work. The impact is delivered not only within scholarly disciplines, but throughout all of the many parts of the economy and society that connect with our research community and our graduates. The work that underlies these pages is a testament to the outstanding contributions of UCD academics, research staff and students and professional support staff in the face of circumstances that have posed – and continue to pose – severe challenges for higher education in Ireland. It reflects our very strong and growing network of partnerships with industry and with other research organisations both in Ireland and internationally. It also reflects the continuing commitment to research and innovation by the Irish government and the European Union through difficult economic times. Based on the creativity and dedication captured in these pages, I am confident that research and innovation in UCD will continue to flourish over the coming years.
