International Reputation
The reputation of a University is based upon
excellence in both teaching and research.
In recent years, many international
rankings organisations have endeavoured to
quantify the relative excellence of academic
institutions. These rankings utilise various
combinations of academic, student and
employer reputation surveys in conjunction
with an assortment of citation and funding
measures to come up with an overall world
ranking for the institutions.

Until 2010 QS compiled the THE rankings.
Post 2010 Thomson Reuters compiles

rose 26 places from 187 to 161. The main
areas where UCD improved its scores in
the Times Higher Education ranking were
in publications per academic, citation
impact and international co-authorship.
These indicators all fall within the category
of improved quality and productivity in
research outputs.
The 2013 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)
rankings show a statistically insignificant
fall of 8 places, and UCD remains in the
130–140 area for the past 3 years.

UCD, made initial strong progress in these
rankings since their introduction in 2005,
reaching a high point of 89th in the world
in 2009. However, changes in the rankings
methodology, the economic crisis and
increased competition from other universities saw UCD ranking slide dramatically in
2011 and in 2012 from this high point.
