WELCOME TO UAB MEDICINE
Welcome to the UAB Medicine Emergency Department and Trauma Center. This booklet is
designed to answer some commonly asked questions and help provide a sense of peace and
direction during this stressful time. We also encourage you to reach out to our staff with any
questions and concerns you may have.
Your loved one is in good hands at UAB Medicine. Our Emergency Department and medical
center offer many specialized services and hold several important distinctions, including:
• Level I Trauma Center
• Magnet-Recognized Nursing Care
• Comprehensive Stroke Center
• Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center
WHAT TO EXPECT
Visitors to the UAB Medicine Emergency Department often ask, “How long will I have to wait
before being seen by a doctor?” Due to many factors, we are unable to predict wait times. The
doctor may order various tests and examinations, such as X-rays, CAT scan, lab work/blood
draw, and EKG. Each of these requires varying amounts of time.
While you wait to be seen, you are
welcome to come and go as you please.
However, we cannot guarantee you a
“spot in line.” So please be aware that if
you leave and your name is called, your
spot will be given to the next person in
line. In addition, you will be required to
pass through our security checkpoints
every time you enter the Emergency
Department. This is for your safety
and ours.
In addition to the doctor who will
oversee your care, you will come into
contact with a variety of UAB Medicine
staff while you are here. The chart
shows the scrub colors worn by various
types of medical staff.
