For those diagnosed before the
age of 45
In 2002, as Birmingham resident Robert Reed battled pancreatic cancer, the
Robert E. Reed Gastrointestinal Oncology Research Foundation was formed
with the hope to have a local foundation to raise funds to support patients with
all forms of gastrointestinal cancer, as well as medical research initiatives at
UAB, under the direction of Marty Heslin, M.D. The funds raised by the Reed
Foundation, more than $1.5 million since 2002, have allowed this research effort
not only to survive, but to grow with multiple scientific publications and novel
clinical trials. Representatives from the Reed Foundation recently presented its
annual donation to the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. This donation of
$140,000, presented to Dr. Heslin and Laura Rogers, M.D., helps to ensure that
groundbreaking research for GI cancers and specifically pancreatic cancer will
continue to thrive at UAB. Pictured, L to R: Dr. Marty Heslin, Hannon Davidson
