RESEARCH FACULTY RESOURCES David C. Naftel, MD, is professor in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB and a professor of biostatics in the UAB School of Public Health. He completed his undergraduate education at Auburn University, his Master of Statistics at North Carolina State University, and his PhD in biostatics at UAB. He has served on multiple councils and committees, including the FDA Circulatory Systems Device Panels and FDA Medical Device Epidemiology Network. He is a member of the American Heart Association, Biometric Society, American Statistical Association, The Alabama Chapter of the American Statistical Association (past secretary/treasurer 1986-87 and president 198889), International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, and Heart Failure Society of America, and he has held membership and leadership roles with a multitude of councils, committees, editorial boards, and university activities. James F. George, MD, is professor of immunology in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UAB and director of the Cardiac Surgery Research Laboratory, which contains the small animal micro-core surgery facility. He received his undergraduate education at Wittenberg University, his Master of Science/Biology at the University of Cincinnati, and his PhD at UAB. A molecular and cellular biologist, Dr. George has worked in the field of heart failure and transplantation for more than 20 years. His research interests include heart failure, transplantation, transplant rejection, the development of new drugs, and clinical outcomes after cardiac surgery and transplantation. He is a member of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (past board member), and he has held membership and leadership roles with a multitude of councils, committees, editorial boards, and university activities. www.uabmedicine.org 61
