James E. Davies, MD, is associate professor of surgery, chief of the Section of Adult
Cardiac Surgery, chief of cardiac surgery at the Birmingham Veterans Administration
Medical Center, and surgical director of the transcatheter aortic valve replacement
(TAVR) program. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama,
earned his medical degree from the UAB School of Medicine, and completed his
cardiothoracic surgical training at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Pennsylvania. He
maintains an active clinical practice with specific interest in cardiac valvular disease and
complex aortic surgery. In conjunction with the Department of Cardiology, he began the
TAVR program. He has performed some 400 TAVR procedures in three years and has
completed greater than 100 open aortic valve replacements annually.
Dr. Davies’ research interests include outcomes analysis in adult cardiac surgery, with emphasis on thoracic
aortic pathology, and analysis and development of endovascular techniques in adult cardiac surgery, with
emphasis on percutaneous cardiac valve procedures. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons,
American Medical Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Society of Thoracic Surgeons,
Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and American Heart Association.
Charles W. Hoopes, MD, is professor of surgery, chief of the Section of Cardiothoracic
Transplantation, and co-director of the UAB Comprehensive Transplant Institute. He
received his undergraduate degree from Lebanon Valley College before completing
graduate studies in anthropology at Wake Forest University. He began his medical
studies at the Duke University School of Medicine, graduating in 1992 and remaining at
Duke for his residency in general surgery. He completed a residency in cardiothoracic
surgery at the University of Michigan before returning to Duke for fellowship training in
thoracic transplantation. In 2002 he joined the faculty of the University of California San
Francisco as an assistant professor of surgery, rising to associate professor and director
of the Thoracic Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Support programs in 2005. He
was recruited to the University of Kentucky as the Jason Alexander Gill Professor in Thoracic Surgery in 2010
and served as director of the UK Transplant Center from 2011 until 2015.
In February 2015, Dr. Hoopes joined UAB as section chief of thoracic transplantation and co-director of the
Comprehensive Transplant Institute. He is currently a graduate student in the School of Public Health at the
University of California (Berkeley). He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in heart and lung
transplantation, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support. Dr. Hoopes has gained an international reputation
as a leader in ambulatory ECMO systems for patients awaiting lung transplantation. He is a member of the
American College of Surgeons, American College of Chest Physicians, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Western
Thoracic Surgical Association, and Southern Thoracic Surgical Association. His clinic and research interests
include heart and lung transplantation, ECMO, and mechanical circulatory support.
