THORACIC SURGERY
THORACIC SURGERY
UAB’s thoracic surgeons have expertise encompassing all areas of general thoracic surgery, including both
open and minimally invasive approaches to treating lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mediastinal tumors.
Endoscopic procedures include diagnostic and therapeutic modalities such as airway and esophageal stenting,
navigational bronchoscopy, and laser ablation. More than 80% of lobectomies are performed with minimally
invasive techniques.
Additionally, UAB has vast experience in the treatment of benign conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux
disease (GERD), paraesophageal hernias, achalasia, chest wall deformities, and hyperhidrosis. UAB Thoracic
Surgery achieved the coveted STS 3-star composite quality rating for lobectomy for lung cancer from July 2011
to June 2014.

ROBOTIC THORACIC SURGERY
UAB’s Robotic Thoracic Surgery program is one of the largest and most robust of its kind in the world. Our
robotics experience incorporates increasingly complex anatomic lung resections (including sleeve resections),
mediastinal operations, and esophagectomies. UAB’s faculty of three general thoracic surgeons has performed
an average of 1,350 general thoracic surgery procedures annually since 2009.
The program attracts surgeons from around the world to learn robotic surgical techniques. Surgeons visit from
numerous countries including China, Taiwan, Singapore, Brazil, South Korea, Argentina, Italy, India, Denmark,
Chile, the Netherlands, Japan, France, Madagascar, Hungary, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Switzerland.
