ADULT CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE
The program draws on resources and faculty from the divisions of Cardiothoracic Adult and Pediatric Surgery,
Cardiovascular Disease, Pediatric Cardiology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, and the Department of Radiology, as
well as services provided by the electrophysiology and cardiac catheterization laboratories. Our overall hospital
mortality rate for ACHD patients from 2012 to 2015 was 1.8%.
CONGENITAL HEART SURGERY
UAB enjoys a longstanding reputation for congenital heart surgery. Our Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)
Program is the only one of its kind in Alabama, and it works in conjunction with the UAB Division of Pediatric
Cardiology to help ensure a smooth transition for patients upon aging out of pediatric care.

PEDIATRIC HEART TRANSPLANTATION
Our pediatric cardiac transplant and mechanical circulatory support programs transitioned to Children’s of
Alabama in 2012, but our tradition of national leadership in these areas continues thanks to close collaboration
between surgeons and the pediatric transplant and mechanical circulatory support cardiology teams. Over the
past 6 years, our 3-year survival rate has exceeded 90% for pediatric heart transplantation.
