We designed a care environment that serves our patients’ medical needs by
bringing the appropriate cardiovascular resources to the point of patient care.
A VISIONARY CONCEPT
The novel facilities design for both Children’s of Alabama and UAB Hospital embodies the vision of James
Kirklin, MD. In 2008, he partnered with Yung Lau, MD, director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology; Jeffrey
Alten, MD, director of Pediatric Cardiac Critical Care; Mike Warren, CEO of Children’s of Alabama (COA); and
other colleagues to design a unique platform of care for patients with congenital heart disease. The result –
contained on a single physical level – spans from the operating rooms and intensive care unit in UAB
Hospital’s North Pavilion through the Women & Infants Center and into Children’s of Alabama.
This design facilitates a continuum of care for patients with congenital heart disease, while allowing our
multidisciplinary team of specialists to easily move from one end of the platform to the other. This platform
is augmented by the expertise of our world-class neonatologists, geneticists, fetal and maternal medicine
specialists, and other clinicians devoted to pediatric cardiac care.
