Not-To-Miss Summer Movies

2013 had its cinematic ups (American Hustle, Gravity, Nebraska), downs (Grown Ups 2, The Family), and mediocrities (The Conjuring, Star Trek Into Darkness). 2014, however, is looking to be a year of mostly cinematic ups. Movies such as The Invisible Woman, Out Of The Furnace and Godzilla are just a few of the many movies you should be looking out for. After some serious searching, I have come up with the following must-see movies for this summer:

2. Transcendence: This movie is topping my list for a few reasons. For one, the protagonist, a computer scientist whose consciousness is uploaded to the internet, is played by no one less than Johnny Depp himself. Who’s better to look at for two hours than him? If you like sci-fi films with a lot of action and some intellectuality, you’ll like this movie.

1. The Fault in Our Stars: Hazel Grace suffers from terminal cancer. However, due to a medical miracle, she can live a few more years. In her support group she meets the charming and witty Augustus Waters, whom she becomes increasingly close with. If you want to end up with butterflies in your stomach and a mixture of emotions ranging from sadness to joy, watch this movie. You might walk out the cinema with wet cheeks.

3. 22 Jump Street: Who would have thought that the remake of the 80’s show 21 Jump Street would become one of the funniest films of 2012? This year, its sequel 22 Jump Street stars the hilarious Jonah Hill, the beautiful Channing Tatum and the some-what talented actor Ice Cube. A piece of advice: prepare yourself for a lot of laughter.

5. Robocop: Lastly, we cannot forget about Robocop. It takes on the sticky business of remaking a classic, with all the disapproval that automatically comes along with such an endeavor. However, judging by its trailer and by the critique it has gotten thus far, it doesn’t seem to be half bad. It is a sci-fi film set in the crime-ridden Detroit in the near future. If you like action, a bit of violence, and a lot of satire, this is the movie for you.

So, if you have a few minutes in between writing your Extended Essay and IA’s (shout-out to my fellow 11th graders) than take my word and watch these movies. If you don’t like them, there is obviously something wrong with you, not me.

4. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit: Shadow Recruit is the fifth film in the Jack Ryan series to hit the big screen. It is action packed and stars no one less than Chris Pine as Jack Ryan. What other convincing mechanisms do you need?
