Music is at the core of Deon “Grammer” Morgan’s life. Born and raised in a small rural town Scotland Neck, North Carolina is where the relationship of music and Grammer began. Music has been an influential part of Grammer’s life from day one. Grammer was raised by his Grand Mother who loved music, especially Blues music. On any given day, you could hear the sounds of Robert Johnson, BB King, John Lee Hooker and Etta James playing through out the Morgan Family’s home. Grammer embraced this music called Blues from his Grand Mother’s generation and was determined at the age of twelve to become a rapper and incorporate the elements of this great music into his songs. Lyrical artistry and the ability to deliver a song with honesty and conviction were the key elements which inspired Grammer to incorporate Blues into Hip Hop music.
Grammer continued to study Blues music, while he honed his lyrical craft working tirelessly with his instrument, his pen and pad to become the best. At the age of twelve, Grammer took the leap from the South and moved to New York with his mom to Staten Island, New York. At the time, there was an electric energy in Staten Island, that energy was provides by a group that would officially put borough on the hip hop map, The Woo Tang Clan. Grammer was an import from the south and was hungry for the mic and ready to show New York City what he was made of. Grammer participated in countless freestyle battles, ciphers, cable shows and open mics showcasing his talent in as many mediums as possible. Grammer walked into all of these arenas with the confidence and determination of his blues mentors he grew up listening to laying his path down to conquer the hip hop game with skills, integrity and honesty.
While Grammer’s lyrical skills flourished, his thirst for the knowledge in the class room began to decline. The streets were calling in a negative way and Grammer was a young teen in search of his dreams as a hip hop artist and maturing into manhood. Grammer’s mom noticed the change in her son and relocated the family to Charlotte, NC immediately before her son saw trouble.
In North Carolina, Grammer went back to the books and school and did not skip a beat with his music. Once situated in Charlotte, Grammer began hitting the recording studio with local producers like, Al Bond. Grammer and Al Bond he recorded the Underground hits like, “Ill Technique” and “I Spit the Real” in 1999. Grammer became the first artist to be featured on Al Bond’s compilation album on Mastermind records. For once in his life Grammer felt he truly found the right ingredients of lyrical artistry, music and elements of the Blues music incorporated to convey himself effectively with his new songs. In June 2004, Grammer completed his first underground mix tape “Street Heat Volume 1” hosted by world renowned Boogie D and DJ Polo. Grammer was a regular fixture in North Carolina radio market appearing countless times on stations like Power 98 and Hot 92.7. That same year Grammer released his first independent album “Indecisive” which was so successful it launched him to open up for artist 50 Cent, T.I, Destiny Childs, Young Jeezy, Fat Joe and Ciara.
In 2006, Grammer released the mixtape “Missing Piece” with DJ Magic from Power 98, followed by “The Greatest Rapper Unsigned” mixtape in 2008. 2010 brought another exciting chapter to Grammer’s career. With the release of his “No Brakes Mixtape” to start the year off Grammer is focused and driven to be the best rapper alive. Grammer released his second mixtape of the year entitled “Give Me the Crown” which was released January 2011. He also re-release his album “Indecisive” on iTunes and Amazon on May 10, 2011. Currently he is working on a new mixtape titled “Give Me The Crown 2“ which will be released by the end of summer in 2011.
