Jewish Composers: An Exploration With Professor Gil Seeley Tuesdays, January 9 – 30, 7 – 9pm The course will delve into the milieus of notable Jewish composers including Mendelsohn, Mahler, Ernst Bloch, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and Erich Korngold. The recordings will be discussed and dissected with Professor Gil Seeley, James W. Rogers Professor of Music Emeritus at Lewis & Clark College. Instructor: Professor Gil Seeley $65/$60 members Senior Library Classic Era of Rock and Roll Wednesdays, January 10 – February 28, 1 – 3 pm Looking through the lenses of history, culture, politics, sociology, philosophy, spiritualism, mysticism and mythology, we will venture around the world of classic rock and roll seeking unique and deeper understanding. The classic rock and role art form will open the doors of perception and give students multiple perspectives of and add new dimensions to good old rock and roll that refuses to die. Instructor: William Frisch $89/$84 members Senior Library The Beatles “From Liverpool to Abbey Road” Monday, January 29, 1 – 3 pm This lecture will follow in the footsteps of The Beatles as they embark on their historic journey starting from their early days as a cover band to the formation of Apple Corps and finally to their remarkable final recordings at Abbey Road Studios. Vinnie Bruno, a Beatles Scholar and Sixties Rock Historian, has lectured extensively on The Beatles and The Sixties at universities, colleges, libraries and community centers. All concert tickets $40/$36 members, $10 drop-in Celebrating Leonard Bernstein: Mass Sunday, January 7, 1 pm Bernstein’s rarely performed Mass, commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy for the opening of the Kennedy Center, surprises us on many levels. Along with classical idioms, it employs the sounds of Broadway, American blues and jazz. As True Concord Voices & Orchestra prepares for its landmark production at Centennial Hall, Music Director Eric Holtan will provide insights to this unique work and discuss Bernstein’s pivotal role in American music. Ballroom Celebrating Music & Meditation w/ Brian Yosef Sunday, February 4, 2 pm Take a journey into the present moment with piano, harmonium, chanting, Jewish spiritual enlightenment teachings and Hassidic stories with Tucson’s Brian Yosef. Ballroom Celebrating The Arizona Balalaika Orchestra Sunday, March 11, 2 pm Founded in 1980 by Russian born Mia Bulgarin Gay, the The Arizona Balalaika Orchestra grew out of a student ensemble in the UA Russian Department, then one of the largest in the US. The concert will feature traditional Russian folk music, some classical composers, as well as several Jewish numbers. Vocalists include the gypsy singers Natasha Neazimbetov and Guy Velgovich. Ballroom Celebrating The Music of Hungary With Love: The Arizona Symphonic Winds Sunday, April 11, 2 pm Join the Arizona Symphonic Winds as they perform music of Hungarian composers and other national composers who were interested by that country’s music. Musical selections will include the “Hungarian Rhapsody” by Liszt; Selections from “The Merry Widow” by Lehar; “Hungarian Dances” by the German composer Brahms and others. The Arizona Symphonic Winds under the direction of László Veres is celebrating its 32nd season as Southern Arizona’s premier community concert band. Ballroom Call for Participants!
