CHARTER STEEL ’ S CHOICE : KOCKS TECHNOLOGY

Charter Steel confirms long-standing Cooperation with Kocks
Charter Steel is a member of Charter Manufacturing , a privately-owned family of companies that has adhered to a simple , successful formula for three generations : “ Our will to grow drives us to do it better .”
In keeping with this philosophy , Charter has decided to expand rolling facilities in Cleveland / USA with the addition of a straight bar rolling mill , featuring two KOCKS Reducing Sizing Blocks in sizes RSB ® 5.0 435 ++/ 6 and RSB ® 5.0 370 ++/ 6 .
Charter Automotive , the second member of the Charter Manufacturing family , was first established in 1948 and the rapid growth of the businesses precipitated the formation of Charter Rolling in Saukville / USA in 1978 to roll wire rod . The Saukville rolling mill was later expanded in 2002 with the addition of a KOCKS RSB ® 300 / 5 ( 6 ) followed by a bar in coil line .
Also in 2002 , Charter Steel purchased the ASW rolling mill in Cleveland / USA . This mill was originally commissioned in 1996 with a KOCKS RSB ® 300 / 4 ( 5 ) that was upgraded subsequently to five independently driven stands in 2007 .
Charter Steel is renowned as a premium quality supplier of special bar quality ( SBQ ) to customers around the world . The two new RSBs destined for Cleveland are equipped with the latest KOCKS 4D EAGLE profile gauges that provide feedback to the KOCKS SCS ® ( Size Control System ) to allow for real-time optimization of rolling conditions and best product tolerances . The highly automated rolling mill is able to produce diameters from 1 to
4 inches ( 25.4 to 101.6 mm ) in bar lengths from 12 to 50 feet ( 3.7 to 15.3 m ).
The light section profile gauge measures the rolled bar shape and tolerance and in addition to providing real-time feedback to the KOCKS SCS ® system to optimize the rolled product shape . The profile gauge also provides statistical evaluation of the data , which can be archived on a standard database for product traceability .
The Size Control System ( SCS ®), the latest development in the KOCKS rolling system , uses the feedback from the profile gauge to optimize rolling parameters to further improve rolling tolerances and product consistency .
The decision to proceed with two KOCKS blocks adds great flexibility to the mill concept . The RSB ® 5.0 435 ++/ 6 can act as an intermediate rolling train but is also able to finish products in the larger size range . Additionally , it supplies relevant feeders for the RSB ® 5.0 370 ++/ 6 which finishes with highest precision the lower size range .
The rolling concept decided on was driven by the Charter philosophy of “ our will to grow drives us to do it better ”. The new rolling mill will be installed and commissioned in 2018 in parallel to the existing rolling line without any mill shutdown .
