Tales of savvy timeshare owners

When I tell people that I edit a magazine for the timeshare-resort industry , those exposed to the industry only through the bad publicity it has garnered over the years tend to make uncomplimentary remarks . Kind words come from those who know and like timesharing themselves , or whose friends and relatives have shared their positive personal experiences .
This latter category includes a sixtyish couple I recently met . Not only do they say nice things about timesharing ; they wax eloquent about the pleasures it has brought to their lives over the years .
While traveling in the Canadian Rockies some years ago , they learned about a timeshare for sale , bought it , and enjoyed using that timeshare and its accompanying RCI exchange membership for eight years . Then the resort where they owned went bankrupt .
No protection
They were told that Canadian law offered its timeshare owners no protection against such a calamity . One moment they owned the timeshare , the next moment they didn ’ t , and that was that .
To their good fortune , RCI maintains their membership as long as they pay their dues .
The couple can ’ t exchange because they have nothing to space-bank , but they can tap into last-minute getaways that don ’ t require an exchange and obtain timeshare accommodations for a modest fee .
When I met them , they had just returned after a week of using a top-tier branded resort as a base from which to explore Las Vegas , NV , and environs .
