OWs update their profiles rather more readily than informing this office and LinkedIn is a useful way for me to find OWs to help with providing careers advice for current boys, among other things. Calling all Chawkerites and Philites We will be holding the 150 th Anniversary Dinner for Chawker’s on Tuesday 5 th February 2019. For Phil’s the date is Tuesday 19 th March. These will take place in the Great Hall of the Merchant Taylors’ Company in London. Formal invitations are in the process of being dispatched. The Trant’s Anniversary Dinner will take place on Tuesday 8 th October 2019 and Hopper’s on Tuesday 12 th November 2019. 2019 reunions As Win Coll Soc will be hosting four 150 th Anniversary Dinners in 2019, where we expect a significant number of attendees, we have decided to suspend a number of the ‘years-on’ lunches and dinners next year. It is the intention that the full programme will be resumed in 2020. In addition, members of Don Soc will be encouraged to attend Winchester Match instead of us holding a separate lunch in April. Andy Sollars retires In 1955, Podge Brodhurst, then the newly-appointed Housemaster of Beloe’s, strode into P&G Wells muttering anxiously about the house photograph. 34 Joe Spicer, one of Miss Wells’ assistants, told him that, by chance, standing quietly a few feet away in the shop, was a promising young photographer called Sollars. ‘Why don’t you give him a go?’ So began the association between Winchester College and Sollars père et fils. EA Sollars, always known as Bob, made such a success of his first assignment in the school that he was soon in demand for every kind of team and house photograph, Royal visits, Ad Portas ceremonies and all major occasions. He retired in 1989, when his son Andy took over; between them they have known seven headmasters. The school is immensely grateful to Andy for carrying on the Sollars family tradition of expertise, loyalty and friendship and we wish him and Fiona a very happy retirement.
